Anxiety

Anxiety is a normal emotion and has helped humans survive for millennia. It is when anxiety starts to interfere with daily life or daily functioning that we start to consider it a mental health disorder.

Generalized anxiety disorder is when one experiences excessive anxiety or worry, or when someone finds it difficult to control their level of anxiety. It is very common across the world, including in the United States. It is prevalent in men and women, and across all age ranges. It can start at any point in someone’s life.

Anxiety can present in many ways and is not just confined to anxious feelings. Anxiety can manifest as restlessness, fatigue or tiredness, difficulty with concentration, irritability, relationship issues, or trouble sleeping. It can lead to other mental health disorders like depression as well.

This may sound daunting, but do not worry. There are many treatments available for anxiety. This is an incredibly common condition, so various treatments are widely available. There are two mainstays of treatment for anxiety: therapy and medications.

There are a few types of therapy available for people with anxiety. These include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), psychodynamic psychotherapy, exposure therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). These types of therapy can be offered through telemedicine or in person.

There are also medications available to treat anxiety. Some common medications for this condition include SSRIs, SNRIs, and buspirone. Sometimes you must try a few medications before finding the right one for you.
