Seasonal Allergies

Sniffles? Runny nose? Itchy eyes? If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, you may have seasonal allergies.

Seasonal allergies most commonly are associated with sinus congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, sore throat, and cough.

Seasonal allergies are incredibly common, especially in areas like the Eastern Shore where we have all four seasons. Sometimes, these seasons seem to all happen in the same day which can make allergies even worse!

Seasonal allergies are typically associated with things like pollen, ragweed, mold, and grass. These triggers are present most of the year but are worse in the spring and fall. This is why most allergy sufferers experience worse symptoms during these seasons.

There are numerous treatments available for seasonal allergies. Most of these treatments are available over the counter and include oral medications like Zyrtec, Claritin, and Xyzal and nasal sprays like Flonase and Astelin. To some people’s surprise, antibiotics are NOT used to treat seasonal allergies.

Whenever you are considering taking a medication for seasonal allergies, consult your healthcare provider. Sometimes over-the-counter treatments are not enough and you may require a prescription medication for your symptoms. You may even need to be referred to an allergist if your symptoms are severe enough.

When in doubt about your symptoms, talk to one of your healthcare providers!
